Magic Island within the larger Ala Moana Beach Park is a big regional park across from the Ala Moana Shopping Center, just outside Waikiki.
It's about 15-25 minutes away from Waikiki depending upon traffic.
It's convenient, scenic, photographs well, has plenty of parking at most times, handicap accessible, and has one of the best views of the iconic Diamond Head.
The spot we use is about 200 yards from the parking lot, on the grass with Diamond Head in the background. It has a wide, flat pedestrian sidewalk which allows for easy access for the less mobile and handicapped.
We perform ceremonies on the grass and close to the jetty creating an unobstructed view of the ocean, Diamond Head, and Waikiki. FYI: As with all weddings, we do not use the sunset as a background for ceremonies, it's too bright.
The beach doesn't work for a beach ceremony because it's set too low and you get people in the background. With that said, we can do sunset photos on the beach if during the right months and ordered with an extended portrait session. See above photo.
If you want something easy, something close, something simple and nice, this is the place.
FYI: The photo above is part of our extended portrait session. The month is March and where the sunset is still visible.
IMPORTANT: Friday at sunset have been very busy lately at sunset time and before for a variety of reasons. First, it's Friday, what we call "Pau Hana, Aloha Friday, no work til Monday" and it's a great place to chill out at sunset. There's a fireworks show during most months of the year starting at 8 pm staged across the canal, fronting the Hilton Hawaiian Village. At about 5:00 pm (after work), people start coming down to set-up and picnic along the park jetty, just where we like to have our weddings for the best view and we might have to use a less desirable spot ( i.e. crappy) than what we use like to use. Parking also can be a problem after 6 pm (no parking) so, irrespective of your ceremony time, you and your guests will want to be finding parking before 5-5:30 pm. Finally, Friday is the day when unanticipated events start, causing the same problems. If any of this might cause a disappointment for you, we suggest doing your event on another day and not on a Friday. If not, we're OK.
